Economic immigrants are people selected for their skills and ability to contribute to Canada’s economy, including skilled workers, business immigrants, provincial and territorial nominees and live-in caregivers.
Skilled Worker
Skilled workers are selected as permanent residents based on
their education, work experience, knowledge of English and/or French,
and other criteria that have been shown to help them become economically
established in Canada.
Skilled workers are people who are selected as permanent residents
based on their ability to become economically established in Canada.
Federal skilled worker applications received on or after February
27, 2008 are now assessed for eligibility according to a set of
instructions issued by the Minister of Citizenship, Immigration
and Multiculturalism.
Business Class
The Business Immigration Program seeks to attract experienced
business people to Canada who will support the development of a
strong and prosperous Canadian economy.
Business immigrants are expected to make a C$400,000 investment
or to own and manage businesses in Canada.
Canada has three classes of business immigrants:
- investors
- entrepreneurs and
- self-employed persons.
Each application can be made for only one class and cannot be changed once the application is submitted. The criteria you must meet to qualify are different for each class.
Family Class
If you are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada,
you can sponsor your spouse, common-law partner, conjugal partner,
dependent child (including adopted child) or other eligible relative
(such as a parent or grandparent) to become a permanent resident.
If you sponsor a relative to come to Canada as a permanent resident,
you are responsible for supporting your relative financially when
he or she arrives. As a sponsor, you must make sure your spouse
or relative does not need to seek financial assistance from the
government.
There are two different processes for sponsoring your family. One
process is used for sponsoring your spouse, conjugal or common-law
partner and/or dependent children. Another process is used to sponsor
other eligible relatives.
Provincial nominees
Persons who immigrate to Canada under the Provincial Nominee
Program have the skills, education and work experience needed to
make an immediate economic contribution to the province or territory
that nominates them. They are ready to establish themselves successfully
as permanent residents in Canada.
To apply under the Provincial Nominee Program, applicants must be
nominated by a Canadian province or territory.
Canadian Experience Class
If you are a temporary foreign worker or a foreign student who graduated in Canada, you often have the qualities to make a successful transition from temporary to permanent residence. You are familiar with Canadian society and can contribute to the Canadian economy. You should have knowledge of English or French and qualifying work experience.
Visitor Visa
Canada welcomes you as a tourist, student or temporary worker.
Every year, more than 5 million people visit Canada to enjoy the
many opportunities our country has to offer.
To visit Canada, you must:
- have a valid travel document, such as a passport
- be in good health
- satisfy an immigration officer that you have ties, such as a job, home and family, that will take you back to your country of origin
- satisfy an immigration officer that you will leave Canada at the end of your visit and
- have enough money for your stay
Student Visa
More than 130,000 students come to study in Canada every year
and even more come to Canada to learn English or French.
A study permit is a written authorization issued to foreign students
authorizing them to engage in studies in Canada.
Foreign students are now a prescribed class of persons who may obtain
temporary resident status and who have been issued study permits
or who are authorized by the Regulations to study. Therefore, foreign
students have the same obligations as temporary residents.
Work Permit
Every year, over 90,000 foreign workers enter Canada to work
temporarily in jobs that help Canadian employers address skill shortages,
or as live-in caregivers.
A work permit is needed for most temporary jobs in Canada, though
for some positions and business people it is not necessary.
Live-In Caregiver
Live-in caregivers are individuals who are qualified to provide
care for children, elderly persons or persons with disabilities
in private homes without supervision. Live-in caregivers must live
in the private home where they work in Canada.
To work as a live-in caregiver in Canada, you must make an application
to the Live-In Caregiver Program. If your application is successful,
you will receive a work permit.
